Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April, 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott received her education at Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education and also worked at two different job. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after completing three years of study and working as a teaching assistant, she left college. As a poet, she began performing in live poetry recitals. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. The two wrote You Got Me together. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. She then secured collaborations, which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience as performers in the Canada tour of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
